This stylish tote bag features Berry by Nikita Larter (2020) an Inuvialuk artist from Inuuvik, Northwest Territories.
Nikita drew this illustration as part of online challenge #NDNtober. #NDNtober was an Indigenous spin on the popular Inktober challenge and was created by @melancholynow and @gray_jay_art on Instagram. NDNtober 2020 was Nikita’s first time participating in the drawing challenge and sharing her artwork publicly. It was such a positive experience for Nikita that she revitalized the hobby and began to practice drawing more consistently. She particularly enjoyed being able to apply her cultural lens to the challenge and this continues to be reflected in her work to this day. Capturing cultural experiences not only allows her to create much needed Inuit representation but also expresses Nikita’s pride in her Inuvialuit identity. Berry picking is an annual tradition that contributes to food sovereignty of Inuit across the Arctic. Nikita has fond memories of picking kimmingnat (cranberries) as a child, which inspired this illustration.
